- Citizen: community member who owes loyalty to their govt & is entitled to protection from it - Civic duties: things we are REQUIRED to do BY LAW - Civic responsibilities: things we are SUPPOSED to do FOR SOCIETY’S WELL-BEING - Personal responsibilities: things we are SUPPOSED to do FOR OUR OWN WELL-BEING - Rights: things GUARANTEED to us BY GOVT - Civil liberties: rights guaranteed to indvs, such as freedom of expression - Civil rights: equal protection under the law 1.2 - 8/31 - Natural-born citizen: in the USA, person who is born a citizen by being born in the USA or its territories and/or has at least one parent that is a U.S. citizen - Naturalized citizen: in the USA, a person who is not a natural born citizens but goes through steps to become one - Naturalization: the legal process to obtain citizenship - Denaturalization: being stripped of one’s citizenship for fraud/deception during the naturalization process - Expatriation: giving up one’s citizenship to become a citizen of another country; can be voluntary or involuntary - Dual-Citizenship: holding citizenship in more than one country 1.3 - 9/1 - Assimilation: blending of different cultures into ONE distinct culture; can be voluntary of involuntary - Cultural pluralism: different cultures COEXIST w/ one another, each keeping their own distinct traits - Culture: set of beliefs, customs, & symbols that SHARED by a group of ppl - Melting pot: the idea that the USA is a place where different cultures BLEND together to form one American culture - Salad bowl: the idea that the USA is a mix of different groups that KEEP their unique cultural traits 1.4 - 9/2 - Democratic: systems of govt where sovereignty lies w/ all citizens - Authoritarian: systems of govt where sovereignty lies w/ one or more leaders who don’t have to answer to the citizens - Sovereignty: those who have the ultimate power or authority - Dictatorship: govt where all power lies w/ one leader - Totalitarian dictatorship: govt where all power lies w/ one leader who demands loyalty by using FEAR & INTIMIDATION - Absolute monarchy: king/queen w/ TOTAL power - Theocracy: govt ruled by RELIGIOUS leaders - Oligarchy: govt ruled by a FEW, usually by elders or those considered WISEST members of society - Aristocracy: govt ruled a the WEALTHY FEW 1.5 - 9/6 - Anarchy: no govt - Direct democracy: govt where citizens make the laws THEMSELVES - Representative democracy: govt where citizens ELECT others to make laws for them; republic - Constitutional monarchy: govt where citizens elect others to make laws for them, but also have king/queen w/ CEREMONIAL role - Social democracy: govt where citizens elect leaders & where many needs & wants of citizens are provided directly by the govt |
